Annette Kisling's black and white photos do not attempt to document the places she visits but rather seek to find a photographic way to approach the particularity of the subject. The artist brings to the foreground the inconspicuousness of a situation. The perceived reality is turned into something exemplary.

The series on show, "Barricades", originates from the harbour area of Rotterdam. The photos focus on the architectural character of the commercial buildings in this vicinity.

"The arrangement of these buildings is pragmatic and functional, as well as unconventional and detailed. I do not wish to render the buildings as a whole, I photograph the facades. I do so by pursuing the idea of the windows, the doors, the openings, the joints, the composition of the facade, the materials, the combinations and the two-dimensional neighbourhoods that consists of relating surfaces. The road pavement is perceived as an area, as equally grey as the tone of the sky. A composed crop of the image evolves, which firmly integrates the building, detaching it, however, from the surroundings and the function related to it." (Annette Kisling)
